Essex County VINELink Coverage

Massachusetts directs the public to VINELink to find a person housed in an MA DOC prison. The state page says the user needs a full first and last name or a DOC commitment number, and it lists telephone service at 866-277-7477. Most important, the current text says only the Massachusetts Department of Correction participates in Massachusetts VINE.

That coverage line controls an Essex County search. A person at an MA DOC prison may be found through the Massachusetts VINELink route even if the criminal case began in Essex. A person held only at Middleton Jail & House of Correction, the Lawrence Pre-release and Re-entry Center, or the Women in Transition Center is not covered by a currently verified ECSD feed. County release must be confirmed through ECSD's release record and the originating court docket.

Search Essex County VINELink Records

Begin at the state explanation so the agency scope is clear, then open the live Massachusetts interface. The goal is to match one MA DOC person, not to browse a list. Names can repeat, and the same person can have county and state custody episodes. Use the commitment number when it is known and preserve the exact wording displayed by the source.

1. Open the official MA DOC locator instructions and follow its VINELink route.
2. Choose Massachusetts and the MA DOC agency or site if the interface asks for them.
3. Enter the full first and last name, or enter the DOC commitment number.
4. Compare identifiers before opening a record when several names match.
5. Record the feeding agency, commitment number, current facility or status, update time, and each exact date label shown.
6. If the result says released, seek the DOC release or discharge record for authoritative confirmation.

If there is no result, state only that the person was not found in the current MA DOC/VINELink search. The spelling or identifier may be wrong, the record may no longer display, or the person may belong to ECSD, another county, BOP, ICE, or a different system. Essex County VINELink Search Screen

The direct Massachusetts VINELink entry is the live interface documented for an MA DOC one-person search.

The captured screen helps identify the correct state route. Live labels and options may change, so record what the interface actually shows during the search.

Do not import result fields from another state. The official Massachusetts page does not promise a permanent archive of discharged people, a standard projected-date field, a supervising-office field, or a fixed retention window. A screenshot of the entry page cannot prove that any named person is in custody or released.

Read Essex County VINELink Results

A live result should be transcribed without changing its labels. The fields below are the items the research directs a user to record when they appear. They are not a promise that every Massachusetts result includes each field. The feeding agency is especially important because it confirms whether the result is from MA DOC rather than assumed county coverage.

Massachusetts correction records distinguish a sentence-based Release Date, an Actual Release from Sentence Date, an Earliest Release Date, and an Earliest Release Max Date. These terms are not interchangeable. VINELink should never be said to display one of them unless the current result uses that exact label.

Release Date begins with the sentence term before deductions that may be earned. Actual Release from Sentence Date records when custody ends after applicable deductions and the operative release mechanism. Earliest Release Date includes parole eligibility and deductions that may be earned. Earliest Release Max Date concerns the controlling maximum and potential deductions but excludes parole eligibility. When a result has only one date, do not choose among these definitions by guess. Preserve the label and seek the sentence-data or discharge record from DOC.

Note: Save the observation date and exact status wording because live custody data and interface labels can change.

Register Essex County Release Alerts

Notification begins only after the correct participating record is selected. The available event and delivery labels should be read on the live screen. The shared VINELink flow can offer phone or email, and text may also be available. A phone registration ordinarily uses a four-digit PIN so the recipient can acknowledge an automated call and stop repeat calls.

1. Open the correctly matched MA DOC person record.
2. Choose the displayed notification action, such as “Get Notified” or a status-change option.
3. Select the offered custody-change, transfer, or release event.
4. Enter the phone or email details requested by the interface; use text only if offered.
5. Create the requested four-digit PIN for telephone alerts.
6. Review the registration and submit the confirmation screen.
7. When an automated call arrives, enter the PIN to acknowledge it and stop repeated calls.
8. Confirm the event with MA DOC because the alert can lag or describe a transfer instead of community release.

Registration is tied to the selected record and offered events. It does not create coverage for ECSD, BOP, ICE, MassCourts, probation, or the Parole Board. If no notification option appears, do not claim that an alert was created.

Essex County Victim Notice Layers

Essex County has three notification layers that must not be blended. An official 2015 announcement said ECSD launched VINE and described near-real-time booking data and alerts. The current ECSD site no longer surfaces that public program, and current Mass.gov instructions now say only MA DOC participates. The older announcement is useful history, but it is not proof of present county feed participation.

ECSD Victim Services is a current, separate process for certified recipients. Eligible victims, witnesses, guardians, and qualifying family members can receive advance notice of final custody release and transfer to a less-secure facility. ECSD also describes emergency notice for a court-ordered release, parole release date, escape, death, an intercounty transfer, or a county-to-state transfer. This is not a public inmate search.

The statewide confidential DCJIS Victim Notification Registry forms a third layer. Eligible people register with supporting material, and the custodial or supervising agency provides qualifying release, movement, parole, or discharge notices under the registry rules. It is also eligibility-based, not a public list.

The county and statewide notice systems answer a different question from the public MA DOC locator. They are designed to notify a registered or certified person about qualifying events. They are not open name-search archives, and their eligibility rules should not be bypassed through the public VINELink screen. Someone entitled to notice should maintain current contact details with the program that accepted the registration and confirm an urgent event with that program or the responsible custodian. The notice itself should be read for its named event, date, and agency rather than treated as a general custody history.

The ECSD Victim Services page describes the county's certified notice events. It remains useful even though no public Essex release feed is verified.

Note: A historical county VINE launch does not override the current state statement limiting Massachusetts VINE participation to MA DOC.

Confirm Essex County Release Status

A released result can show that a person is no longer in the participating custody source. It does not by itself prove freedom from every other authority, the legal release type, the exact exit time, or the end of supervision. A transfer can end MA DOC custody at one location while another custody or legal status begins.

MA DOC public records are separate from county records. DOC expressly says it does not process requests for county jails or houses of correction. For a past state-prison release, request the existing certificate and final sentence or date-computation record using the full name, commitment number, facility, and relevant period.

Essex County VINELink Limits

VINELink is not the Bureau of Prisons locator, ICE Online Detainee Locator, U.S. Marshals Service, MassCourts, a probation roster, or a guaranteed ECSD feed. Data can lag. A notification can describe a transfer or custody change rather than final community release. The system also does not replace a discharge certificate.

For a county detainee, request the ECSD Offender Management System release date and type and compare the Essex docket. For a federal inmate, use BOP, where “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody” ends only BOP custody. For immigration custody, ICE says its locator includes people released from ICE custody within the last 60 days. After that period, absence proves only that the locator window has passed.

A sound Essex County result states which source was checked, when it was checked, what exact status appeared, and which agency was contacted for confirmation. That narrow record is more reliable than turning an absent name or automated alert into a claim the source does not support.
